Sony launched the WH-1000XM6 headphones exactly two months ago at a price tag of $449. While everyone expected the company to solve an annoying durability issue reported in the WH-1000XM5, a new report suggests otherwise. Sony’s latest WH-1000XM6 has reportedly suffered a similar durability flaw as its predecessor, as a user on the Chinese platform, Red Post, claimed that the headphones’ hinge has broken near the headband.

The first case of a broken hinge on the Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones has just surfaced

Folks over at Gizmodo first spotted a Reddit post that includes a screenshot of a post from Red Post, detailing the WH-1000XM6’s broken hinge. The user, who claimed to have handled the headphones carefully, also shared images of the broken hinge near the headband.

To catch you up, that’s the same area many WH-1000XM5 users will refer to as its fragile point. Sony received a lot of complaints regarding this issue. This is why it redesigned the hinge of the new model. The company ended up adding a metal component within the plastic housing and brought back the folding mechanism.

Before you start panicking, it’s the very first case of a WH-1000XM6 with a broken hinge. It’s hard to tell whether the issue is widespread at this point. Additionally, it is unclear whether the claims about handling the headphones “carefully” are accurate. All that said, this news has raised eyebrows among a few Reddit users and headphone owners.

Sony would hope the issue isn’t widespread

Prior to the report of a broken hinge, the Sony WH-1000XM6 has been lauded for top-notch ANC features. The new headphones have also been praised for audio clarity thanks to the custom-designed drivers. Moreover, if the fragile hinge turns out to be a widespread issue once again, it’ll surely undermine upgrades that the audio tech giant has introduced.
