Google continues its quiet expansion of AI into more corners of your digital life. The latest spot getting a smart upgrade is Google Discover, the personalized news and content feed you likely scroll through daily on your Android or iOS device. According to recent findings, Google is currently experimenting with AI-generated summaries for stories on your Discover feed.

The latest report comes from the 9to5Google team. The new AI story summaries for Discover aim to give you a quick, digestible overview of articles before you even click. Instead of just seeing a single publication’s logo, you might start noticing cards with several overlapping icons. This visual cue indicates that the summary you are reading was generated using information from multiple sources. If you are curious to see all the contributing articles, simply tap on these icons.

Google is now testing AI-powered summaries in your Discover feed

The summaries themselves are concise, similar to those of AI Overviews on Google Search. They are typically around three lines of text, with an option to “See more” if you want to expand them. The idea is to provide you with more context and information upfront, helping you decide whether the full article is worth your time.

Of course, with AI comes a standard caution. These summaries will reportedly include a disclaimer that reads, “Generated with AI, which can make mistakes.” This reminds users that while helpful, the AI is not infallible.

For now, these AI summaries are appearing alongside the existing solo article format, so you will still see a mix of content presentation.

Publishers probably won’t be happy

That said, Google’s move may not please publishers. Recently, Google Search’s AI-powered summaries have been receiving backlash in both the UK and EU countries. Now, the search giant is bringing them to a feed where they weren’t previously present.

Publishers who oppose Google’s AI summaries claim that the feature has a negative impact on website traffic. Some speculate that providing a quick summary might reduce the number of clicks on the original, full articles. After all, if you get the answer you’re looking for directly in the results, why access the original sources?

In addition to the AI summaries, Discover is also testing a convenient direct “Save” icon right on the content card. This will make it much easier to bookmark articles you want to revisit later, with saved items appearing neatly in your Activity tab. The “Save” option was already available from the three-point menu in each menu. Having it available just a tap away will likely encourage users to save more content.

Both the AI summaries and the enhanced save feature are still in the testing phase. This means that they are not yet widely available to all users. However, this move clearly shows Google’s vision of integrating AI deeper into how we consume content.
