In the AI space, Anthropic and OpenAI are essentially rivals. Both companies have developed their own AI models that, for the most part, are pretty similar to each other in terms of capabilities. However, it seems that Anthropic has decided to cut off OpenAI from accessing its Claude model.
Anthropic cuts off OpenAI’s access to Claude
In a report from WIRED, sources told the publication that Anthropic decided to cut off OpenAI from accessing its Claude model. This apparently stems from a violation of Anthropic’s terms of service.
The company confirmed this in a statement to WIRED. According to Anthropic spokesperson Christopher Nulty, “Claude Code has become the go-to choice for coders everywhere, and so it was no surprise to learn OpenAI’s own technical staff were also using our coding tools ahead of the launch of GPT-5. Unfortunately, this is a direct violation of our terms of service.”
Based on the company’s commercial terms of service, customers are not allowed to use its AI models to “build a competing product or service,” which also includes competing AI models. In this instance, if OpenAI’s staff were using Claude to help develop GPT-5, it would be a clear violation of those terms.
OpenAI has fired back at Anthropic. The company’s chief communications officer, Hannah Wong, told WIRED, “It’s industry standard to evaluate other AI systems to benchmark progress and improve safety. While we respect Anthropic’s decision to cut off our API access, it’s disappointing considering our API remains available to them.”
However, according to Nulty, Anthropic will continue to ensure OpenAI has API access for “benchmarking and safety evaluations.” However, it is unclear how restricting OpenAI’s access to Claude’s API will have an effect on that.
GPT-5 coming soon
GPT-5, for those unfamiliar, will be the latest model from OpenAI. The launch of GPT-5 was delayed at the start of the year. The company says it expects to launch it this summer, and the latest reports claim we could see it as soon as this month. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has spoken highly of GPT-5, to the point where its capabilities have “scared” him.
