Qualcomm could confuse everyone with the new addition to its processor lineup. Well, that will come to pass if the latest rumor is accurate. That rumor claims that Qualcomm’s upcoming chip will be called the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, and now, it won’t be the company’s flagship offering. That new chip tier from Qualcomm could cause naming confusion.
Naming of Qualcomm’s upcoming chip will bring a lot more confusion to the table
Sounds confusing? Well, that’s because it is. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 was a flagship chip, then Qualcomm decided to change the name of its successor to the Snapdragon 8 Elite, while the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 is still a thing.
Now, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 could be on the way, and no, it won’t succeed the Snapdragon 8 Elite. The Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 aka Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 is still in plans. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is supposed to be a tier below it.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 will allegedly sit below the ‘Elite’, but above the ‘8s’ tier
The SM8845 aka Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip will allegedly be placed in-between the 8s and Elite series chips. Yes, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 5 is still coming, it would seem, this chip is not replacing it.
Just to be clear, the information does come from Digital Chat Station, but he only mentioned the name of the chip. He did not go further into comparing it to other processors from the company, GSM Arena did delve into it, however.
In any case, if this comes to pass, Qualcomm’s processor lineup will become more confusing than ever before. At one point in the past, Qualcomm had clear tiers of processors. It was quite clear which chip belonged where. Now… well, those lines are considerably blurred.
We’re not sure when will the SM8845 arrive. Chances are it will launch before the ‘Elite’ processor, though, or at least alongside it during the Snapdragon Summit 2025.
