We think Apple is resting on its laurels a bit too much. The company has many products that sell like hotcakes while dominating certain areas of the market. However, the company might have slacked off a bit too much. Now, Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman thinks that if Apple wants to stay ahead of the competition, a smart ring could do the trick.
Apple needs a smart ring
In the latest issue of Gurman’s Power On newsletter, the analyst claims that Apple’s wearables segment is starting to decline. The segment, which brought in roughly $40 billion a year for the company, fell by 7% in the past fiscal year. The Apple Watch series alone fell by 14%, and the latest data suggests it will continue to decline.
Gurman points out how Apple hasn’t really done much to refresh its products. The Apple Watch has maintained the same design as the past several generations. While the tech has been upgraded, visually it’s a little boring. The same can be said for the AirPods, where the Pro model hasn’t been refreshed since 2022.
This is why Gurman thinks that in order to stay ahead of the competition, Apple should produce a smart ring. The analyst points at Oura who has been selling smart rings for years, suggesting that there is a demand for the tech. Even Samsung jumped onto the bandwagon last year.
He also suggests that an Apple smart ring could appeal to users who want something more comfortable and discreet. Not to mention, the lack of a display also means longer-lasting battery life. Plus, rings are more fashionable. People already accessorize themselves with rings, which are easier to match compared to a smartwatch.
The rumors
Rumors of an Apple-branded smart ring have been around for years. However, it has yet to come to pass. We wouldn’t be surprised if Apple explored the idea internally. But for whatever reason, it hasn’t materialized into an actual physical product.
While the Apple smart ring may never see the light of day, Gurman points out that Apple is working on other wearables. For starters, Apple plans on creating a follow-up product for the Vision Pro. The company is also rumored to be developing a pair of smart glasses that could rival the likes of Meta.
The device is rumored to arrive at the end of 2026. However, as with all Apple rumors, take it with a grain of salt. It is possible that the launch could be delayed for whatever reason. So, until we see it with our own two eyes, we’re not holding our breaths.
