Last year, Apple officially stepped into a new product category, headsets. This came in the form of the Vision Pro, which we honestly feel that Apple priced itself out of the market. However, Apple is now rumored to be working on a second-gen Vision Pro, which could launch by the end of 2025.

Second-gen Vision Pro coming in 2025

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is gearing up to launch its second-gen Vision Pro headset in 2025. The report claims the headset will feature an upgraded M4 chipset and a redesigned strap. This is to address complaints that users had with the first-gen model to help combat neck and head pain.

Apple is also rumored to make some changes to the M4 chip. It will reportedly feature more than 16 neural engine cores compared to the current M2 chip. This should make it twice as fast compared to the first-gen model. It should be noted that Gurman’s report slightly contradicts analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who previously said Apple could equip the second-gen Vision Pro with an M5.

However, both analysts agree on one thing, which is that it will launch by the end of the year. Gurman’s report also suggests that Apple will place a heavier emphasis on AI in the second-gen Vision Pro. This isn’t surprising given that Apple is trying to push Apple Intelligence across its products and services. However, given its current state, we’re not sure if adding Apple Intelligence to the Vision Pro will do much.

Apple’s foray into the headset space

We’re sure we weren’t alone in being surprised that Apple decided to dip its toes in the headset space. Before this, the only wearables the company was known for was the Apple Watch.

Apple made a big deal about the features and functionality of the Vision Pro. So far, the majority of reviews have praised its capabilities. However, the lack of a robust ecosystem and its price meant that it wasn’t a headset designed for the masses. Earlier rumors suggested that the first-gen Vision Pro was aimed more towards developers.

The company is rumored to be working on multiple headsets, and possibly even a pair of smart glasses. Apple isn’t alone in trying to break into the headset space. Samsung and Google are trying with Project Moohan and Android XR. Meta already seems to be dominating with its Ray-Bans. So, Apple definitely has a long way to go in catching up.
