The current GPT-4.1 AI update is a particularly strong one. With every update, OpenAI makes ChatGPT a little smarter and better. However, if you’re looking forward to a more comprehensive and significant update, that would come in GPT-5. But as it turns out, we won’t have to wait much longer. According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, GPT-5 should be launching this summer.

GPT-5 coming this summer

Altman was recently interviewed by Andrew Mayne, a former employee at OpenAI. In the interview, Altman spoke about the future of ChatGPT and the launch of GPT-5. When Mayne asked Altman when GPT -5 would launch, the CEO suggested that it would arrive this summer. However, he stopped short of giving a specific date.

That said, it is unclear how big of an update GPT-5 will be. When it comes to software naming conventions, for example, going from Android 15 to Android 16 is deemed significant. However, going from Android 15 to Android 15.1 is less significant. This doesn’t mean that updates aren’t welcome, but that’s how it usually works.

Altman acknowledges this by saying, “It used to be much clearer. We would train a model and put it out, and then we would train a new big model and put it out.” Either way, it looks like we’ll just have to wait and see.

The last time OpenAI updated ChatGPT was with the launch of GPT-4.1 back in April. It was initially expected that the next update would be GPT-5, but the company announced it would delay the launch until a later date. Even though no specific dates were mentioned this time either, at least we know roughly when to expect it.

Rising competition

ChatGPT is probably the biggest name in the mainstream AI space. It has almost become synonymous with Google. However, this doesn’t mean that OpenAI gets to sit on its hands. OpenAI has a bunch of competitors who are cranking out equally capable models. This includes Anthropic, which recently released Claude 4.

Let’s not forget there is stiff competition from China. It is hard for foreign companies to break into the Chinese market, which in turn has allowed many homegrown AI companies to spring up. Most notable is probably DeepSeek, which turned the AI industry on its head when it launched earlier this year.
