Earlier this month, Samsung announced its latest foldable flagship, the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Besides announcing improved features, the company also claimed that the folding screen of the device can withstand 500,000 folds, hinting at solid durability. However, the concern here is that the screens of previous foldables don’t last as long in extreme heat and cold environments. Well, folks over at Android Authority reached out to Samsung to get answers about the durability of the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s screen in extreme conditions. Guess what? The durability of these screens in extreme conditions has improved.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 offers a decent durability upgrade

Samsung says Bureau Veritas has rated the inner screen of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 (Review) for 60,000 folds at -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit). That’s a significant improvement over the rating received by foldable screens in cold conditions a few years back. For example, the inner screen of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 could sustain 30,000 folds at the same temperature.

Although the durability of the foldable screen takes a serious hit in cold conditions, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 offers a decent upgrade. In a real-world scenario, 60,000 folds means 30 folds a day for just over five years. Let’s say you fold it 100 times a day. In that case, the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s screen would last just over 18 months. It all depends on how much you fold and unfold the screen.

There’s some good news for those living in a hot climate. The Galaxy Z Fold 7’s screen is rated to withstand 300,000 folds at 60 degrees Celsius (140 degrees Fahrenheit). That’s exactly double what the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5’s folding screens were rated to withstand.

Not to forget, Samsung has a safety guide in place for foldables as well. It suggests that you should use these devices at temperatures ranging from 0 to 35 degrees Celsius. If you live in the US, that’s equivalent to 32 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. In short, storing foldables outside the recommended temperature range can cause damage to your device’s lifespan. All that said, it’s good to know that Samsung has worked in the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s screen durability department.
