Google has just confirmed that it’s combining Android and Chrome OS into a single platform. This could be the first time this happened, as the information comes directly from a Google executive.

Yes, Android and Chrome OS merger is happening, as Google just confirmed it

Back in November last year, it was reported that Google is planning to merge the two operating systems. Well, Sameer Samat, president of the Android ecosystem at Google, has just confirmed that it’s happening.

He asked a TechRadar journalist why they were using an Apple Watch, iPhone, and MacBook. He also said the following: “I asked because we’re going to be combining Chrome OS and Android into a single platform, and I am very interested in how people are using their laptops these days and what they’re getting done.”

That is a clear-cut confirmation that it’s happening. As far as I can remember, this is the first time Google publicly confirmed it. Unfortunately, Google’s exec did not share any more information on the topic.

Android could assimilate Chrome OS, in a way

Last year, it was reported that Google would migrate Chrome OS over to Android, rather than combining the two platforms. So Android will basically assimilate Chrome OS, in a way. It remains to be seen if that’s true.

Considering the question that Samat asked, suggests that Google is still trying to improve the merger. Things don’t seem to be done and ready to go just yet, so who knows how long will we have to wait.

This does make sense, as Android is gaining some new features for large displays. A proper desktop mode is one of them, along with desktop windowing, improved app adaptability, and more.

We’ll have to wait for more information from Google, but the merger is happening, it seems. It’s anyone’s guess when it might actually be put in motion, though.
