Google’s Material 3 Expressive is slowly catching up with most of its apps already gaining the bold new look. The changes are even reaching other Google platforms like Wear OS, in addition to Android phones and tablets. The Google Messages app for Wear OS is the latest to join the Material 3 Expressive bandwagon.

Messages app on Wear OS gets a taste of Material 3 Expressive

Telegram user jolivekoffi spotted the Material 3 Expressive changes to the Messages app on their Pixel Watch 3. This makeover brings more integrated UI elements. These mainly include tinted message bubbles and color-filled buttons. Some of the buttons, including those for options in a list, are shaped more dynamically to suggest a “scrollable nature.” There’s also text on some buttons along with icons.

The redesigned app doesn’t seem widely available just yet, as some report not having the latest look yet. This is despite running the latest version of the app, hinting at a server-side rollout or possibly being meant for specific watch models. Gmail, Keep, Calendar, and the Gemini app for Wear OS are some of the apps that have gotten a taste of the new M3 Expressive visuals on smartwatches.

Material 3 Expressive is gradually expanding

Meanwhile, Google is testing the Material 3 Expressive design for Messages on Android, but it’s only for beta users. Google Keep recently received a new redesign, with a thicker new search bar and slightly bigger icons. Google Phone also received the new visual overhaul with a refreshed dialer, rounded cards, and new gesture options. Going by the trend, the M3 Expressive rollout could be on its way shortly to other apps.
