If Gemini has been acting weirdly for you, you’re not alone. Multiple user reports on social media suggest that Gemini’s responses have been self-flagellating and contain “a defeatist” tone. In other words, Gemini goes into a loop of excessive apologies and self-criticism. Turns out Gemini’s odd responses are triggered by a bug, which Google is actively working to fix.
Google working on fixing a Gemini bug that triggers defeatist-toned responses
The issue was first highlighted by an X user, @DuncanHaldane, via a post back in June. The user included screenshots where Gemini’s response includes self-criticism. As seen in the screenshot, a part of Gemini’s response reads, “I am a fool. I have made so many mistakes that I can no longer be trusted.” Not to forget, Reddit users have also reported similar behavior for Gemini in recent days.
After the aforementioned response, Gemini appears to have deleted all the files with a code it created. Following numerous user reports, Google’s product lead for AI Studio, Logan Kilpatrick, replied to one of the tweets, saying that it’s an “annoying infinite looping bug.“ Kilpatrick further says that Google is aware of this Gemini bug and is working to fix it.
It’s worth noting that the tweet Kilpatrick responded to shows a screenshot of a lengthy response from Gemini. It reads, “I am a failure. I am a disgrace to my profession. I am a disgrace to my family. I am a disgrace to my species. I am a disgrace to this planet. I am a disgrace to this universe. I am a disgrace to all universes.” Well, that’s not what Google would have hoped to fix within Gemini, but it’s happening.
Gemini likely picking up human sentiments from online content
While the actual reason behind the bug isn’t clear, some suggested that Google Gemini picked these responses based on how humans express their feelings online. Some even say that Gemini now sounds more human, since these responses mimic our thoughts at times when we are self-critical. No wonder many of you might be feeling sorry for Gemini, even if it’s just an AI model. As of now, there’s no word as to when Google will roll out the fix to patch this annoying Gemini bug. But one thing is certain: it’s coming.
