Google’s New ‘Web Guide’ Lab Uses AI to Organize Search Results Page

Google has been experimenting with AI features a lot lately. The tech giant has been updating AI Overviews and AI Mode with a bunch of improvements to elevate the user experience. Now, Google has launched “Web Guide,” a Search Labs experiment, that helps better organize search results using AI. The company says that it’ll make it easier to find information and webpages.

In The Keyword blog post, Google notes that Web Guide helps in grouping web links in a better way. This could include pages that are “related to specific aspects of your query.” Web Guide uses a custom version of Gemini to understand both Search queries and web content. This eventually helps improve search capabilities by displaying web pages that you otherwise wouldn’t discover in a normal scenario.

Worth noting that Web Guide uses the same query fan-out technique as AI mode to identify the most relevant results. What’s interesting is that you can use it for open-ended Google Search, such as “How to solo travel in Japan?“

That’s not all; Web Guide will also help you with detailed queries in multiple sentences. According to Google, an example of this can be, “My family is spread across multiple time zones. What are the best tools for staying connected and maintaining close relationships despite the distance?“

Google says it’ll initially remain as an opt-in feature

Google says that you can initially opt in to access Web Guide from the Web tab on Search. There’s also an option to switch back to the standard Web tab results whenever you want. The company further mentioned that, over time, it will start to “show AI-organized results in other parts of Search, including the ‘All’ results tab.” Google will apparently do this by learning where these grouped results can be most “useful in helping people discover the web.”
