Based on the release schedule of OpenAI’s AI models, it was expected that GPT-5 would have been released earlier this year. Unfortunately, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that the release was delayed. Altman said that GPT-5 will be arriving this summer, and now its release date could be close at hand.
The GPT-5 release date is close
Altman never specified when exactly GPT-5 would be released in the summer. However, it is believed that the release date for GPT-5 is close. This is based on leaks and hints spotted online that indicate that OpenAI is getting close to releasing its latest AI model.
One of those hints is a post on X by engineer Tibor Blaho. Blaho shared a screenshot of a config file dated July 13, 2025 that hinted at “GPT-5 Reasoning Alpha.” Then, independent researchers discovered a reference to GPT-5 in OpenAI’s internal BioSec Benchmark repository. This suggests that the AI model is being trialed in some form.
Last but not least, during a discussion of the new ChatGPT Agent feature, OpenAI’s Xikun Zhang said that GPT-5 “is coming.”
One of the biggest changes is that GPT-5 is supposed to act as a unified model. This means that it can perform multiple tasks from a single request. This is compared to the current GPT models, where some models are better for research, some for coding, and others for general-purpose. It is also rumored to address the issues of hallucination and misunderstandings.
What OpenAI has released so far
So, while many users are waiting to see the improvements and changes that are coming as part of GPT-5, OpenAI hasn’t been resting on its laurels. Ahead of the release, OpenAI has introduced variants of its GPT-4 model. This includes GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.5, with the latter designed for research.
OpenAI also announced ChatGPT Agent. This is the company’s take on agentic AI that will help users automate a variety of tasks. It is currently only available to ChatGPT Pro subscribers. However, other paid subscribers are expected to be able to access it soon, with some limitations on how many queries you can make a month.
Also, there are rumors that OpenAI is working on its own AI-powered browser. This might be in response to Perplexity, which recently launched its Comet AI browser.
