It Looks Like X is Now Under Criminal Investigation

X is a social media platform used by the public to share memes, opinions, the news, and so on. As such, it does leave itself open to all kinds of lawsuits, even if the posts made do not originate from the company itself. Now, it looks like over in France, X is facing a criminal investigation.

X faces criminal investigation in France

According to the French authorities, it is throwing two allegations at X in its criminal investigation against the company. One of them is alleged organized interference “with the functioning of an automated data processing system.” The other is the organized fraudulent extraction of “data from an automated data processing system.”

It has also been requested that X be investigated “as both a legal entity and through individual persons.” What does this mean? It means that an international arrest warrant could be issued against Elon Musk, who is X’s owner, and X’s company executives. This isn’t entirely unprecedented.

Previously, French authorities arrested Telegram’s founder, Pavel Durov. Musk had criticized the arrest at that time. But now, it looks like Musk could soon find himself in Durov’s shoes. X has yet to issue an official response to the investigation, but it definitely sounds serious.

This isn’t the first time X has faced complaints. More recently, Grok, the AI model integrated into X, faced backlash over very inappropriate comments it made as part of user prompts. This forced xAI, the company behind Grok, to temporarily take the bot offline.

How will the Trump administration react?

This is where it gets interesting. Shortly after taking office for the second term, US President Trump had criticized EU officials for seemingly targeting US tech companies. He called the EU’s treatment of US companies unfair and expressed his concern about it. At that time, the EU was targeting companies such as Apple over alleged unpaid taxes.

Until a few weeks ago we would have imagined that Trump would gladly step in and offer an opinion on the matter. However, if you’ve been following the news, Trump and Musk have had a very public falling out. Whether or not Trump will come to Musk and X’s aid remains to be seen.
