Launch of Apple M4 Ultra Still Expected, Mac Pro Upgrade on the Horizon

When Apple announced its most powerful chipset, the M3 Ultra for Mac Pro, it was kind of clarified that there’s no plan for the brand to continue the ‘Ultra’ chipsets. Many fans were then disappointed to hear that the M4 Ultra wouldn’t be coming. But in a surprising shift, the Cupertino tech giant has reversed course and is now reportedly developing the M4 Ultra.
Leaked codename reveals that M4 Ultra for Mac Pro is in the works
The primary reason behind the company’s plan to give up on the development of the Ultra chipsets was its high R&D costs. It needs millions of dollars to be burned to develop the silicon. And even then, the sales volume is not much on the higher side. While it’s still unclear whether Apple will release the M4 Ultra or not, the developers are apparently working on the chipset.
As per an internal code published by Apple, and spotted by MacWorld, the company seems to be working on a high-end chip meant for the Mac Pro. And yes, we are talking about the surprising M4 Ultra only. The internal identifier t8152 with the codename “Hidra” has been confirmed to be none other than the upcoming Ultra chipset.
It is going to be the most powerful silicon from Apple
One of the sources had earlier reported that Apple is indeed working on a powerful silicon. And the current leak seems to be aligning well with it. However, there’s a bit of confusion as another leak claims that while the tech giant is, indeed, working on a pro silicon but it won’t be launched as “M4 Ultra” in the market.
Mark Gurman also pointed out that there are tons of production challenges associated with the M4 Ultra chip. And this is probably the reason why Apple is hesitant to launch it.
In a nutshell, it’s clear that the Cupertino tech giant is working on a powerful chipset for its Mac Pro. However, whether it will launch as M4 Ultra or with a different moniker is totally up to the brand. Only time can tell this.
