Creating your own AI model from scratch is time-consuming and expensive. Plus, not everyone has the technical know-how to do so. This is why many companies that need an AI model might pay to use APIs from existing companies such as OpenAI. OpenAI was supposed to launch its own open model for developers, but announced it will delays it till a later date.

OpenAI delays launch of its open model

In a post on X by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, he confirmed that the company will delay the launch of its open model. According to Altman, the plan was to launch it this week. However, he says that they are delaying it to run “additional safety tests” and “review high-risk areas.” He also states that he is unsure how long this delay will take, so you probably shouldn’t expect to see it anytime soon.

This delay comes on the back of the company’s previous plans, which were to launch its new GPT-5 model. That has also been delayed to the summer. Hopefully, the delay of OpenAI’s open model will not have an impact on GPT-5, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Many are anticipating OpenAI’s open model launch

For end-users, the delay of the open model might not be such a big deal. However, it is a big deal for developers. Unlike OpenAI’s existing GPT model, the open model will be available for developers to download and run on their own machines. This means that developers will be able to tinker with it and create something of their own based on the open model.

OpenAI has basically done most of the legwork. The open model will allow developers to customize it further to their own needs. It will also let them test out things on a locally-run server or computer. This could be ideal for companies who want an AI model that is more customized and tailored to their specific needs.

Right now, OpenAI has APIs that developers and companies can pay to access. For the most part, companies looking to put together a chatbot for their website can use these APIs. However, like we said, an open model opens the possibility to a deeper level of customization that could address particular needs.

Either way, we’ll keep our eyes peeled for when OpenAI’s open model launches. But for now, hopeful developers will just have to remain patient.
