Samsung Explains Why the Galaxy Z Fold 7 Didn’t Get a Bigger Battery

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 has brought forth quite a few upgrades over its predecessor. It comes with a much thinner body, it’s a lot lighter, it has an improved hinge, and more. One thing that didn’t get improved is the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s battery, and Samsung just reflected on that.
Samsung has explained why the Galaxy Z Fold 7 didn’t get a bigger battery
The company said, to SamMobile, that “most” Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 users wanted a bigger battery, while the Galaxy Z Fold 7 had other priorities. Samsung noted improved cameras, a wider cover screen, and slim and light design as bigger priorities.
As a reminder, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 has a 4,300mAh battery, compared to a 4,000mAh unit in the Galaxy Z Flip 6. The Galaxy Z Fold 7, on the other hand, includes a 4,400mAh unit, just like its predecessor.
Samsung decided to stick with a regular Li-Po battery, instead of going for a silicon-carbon unit, like most of the competitors. That would allow the company to increase capacity without increasing the physical size of the battery.
The OPPO Find N5 trumps the Fold 7 in both battery capacity & charging speed departments
The OPPO Find N5, one of the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s direct competitors, includes a 5,600mAh battery, thanks to silicon-carbon tech. That is a lot more capacity than what the Fold 7 offers. That phone has slightly larger displays, sure, but it offers a lot more battery capacity.
Another thing that Samsung didn’t improve is charging speed. That’s not something that Samsung tried to defend, but it’s worth noting as it’s directly related to battery capacity/battery life.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 supports 25W wired, 15W wireless, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging. The OPPO Find N5, on the other hand, supports 80W wired, 50W wireless, and reverse wired charging. The difference in charging speed between the two phones will be quite considerable.
