Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: Design
Design-wise, the two phones are quite similar until you check out their cover displays. That’s where you’ll see the most notable design-related change. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 has a notably larger cover display and thinner bezels around it. Its cover display goes around the rear cameras, while the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has the so-called folder-type cover display. Both devices include two horizontally aligned cameras on the back, in the top-left corner.
Both devices also include a foldable display with a centered display camera hole. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 has thinner bezels around that panel too, actually. The frame is flat all around, on both smartphones. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 also has a larger main display. Both smartphones are made out of aluminum and glass, while both have slightly rounded corners. The Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is used on the back of both phones.
A side-facing fingerprint scanner is used on both devices, as it’s embedded in their power/lock button. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 comes with an IP48 certification for water and dust resistance, while the Galaxy Z Flip 5 offers an IPX8 certification for water resistance. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is slightly higher, notably wider, and a bit thinner in comparison. The two phones have the same weight, basically, as the difference is only 1 gram.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: Display
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 has a 6.9-inch Foldable Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X main display. That panel has a 120Hz refresh rate, which is adaptive. HDR10+ content is supported here, while the peak brightness is 2,600 nits. The resolution here is 2520 x 1080 pixels. The screen-to-body ratio is around 88%, while the display aspect ratio is 21:9. The cover display measures 4.1 inches, and it’s a Super AMOLED display. A 120Hz refresh rate is used, while the peak brightness is 2,600 nits. The resolution here is 1048 x 948 pixels, and the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protects this panel.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, on the other hand, has a 6.7-inch Foldable Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display. That panel has a 120Hz refresh rate, and it supports HDR10+ content. The peak brightness here is 1,750 nits, while the screen-to-body ratio here is around 85%. The resolution this display offers is 2640 x 1080. The cover display measures 3.4 inches, and it’s a Super AMOLED unit. The resolution here is 748 x 720 pixels, while the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protects that panel. This display is only a 60Hz panel, though.
Both of these smartphones have really good displays, there’s no doubt about it. They’re vivid, sharp, and have great viewing angles. The newer phone does have several advantages, however. Its main display does get notably brighter when needed. On top of that, the cover display on the phone is larger, with thinner bezels around it, not to mention it’s a 120Hz panel, unlike the one on the Galaxy Z Flip 5.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: Performance
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 is fueled by the Exynos 2500 processor from Samsung. That’s a 3nm chip, which is paired with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM. Samsung also used UFS 4.0 flash storage here. The Galaxy Z Flip 5, on the other hand, is fueled by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, a 4nm processor. That chip is paired with 8GB of LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 flash storage. Neither phone supports storage expansion, however.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 still offers great performance, actually. The phone works perfectly fine, and there’s not much to complain about. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is a more powerful smartphone, however, of course, it is 2 years newer. Both phones do deliver when it comes to day-to-day performance. They’re quite snappy in that regard, and perform really well when you need them to.
What about gaming? Well, they can both do a fine job. Granted, there are processors out there that are better suited for gaming than the Exynos 2500 at the moment, but that chip does really well, as does its GPU. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 can still hold its own when it comes to gaming, even though it’s past its prime, of course. Excessive heat is not an issue on either of these two devices.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: Battery
A 4,300mAh battery sits inside the Galaxy Z Flip 7. The Galaxy Z Flip 5, on the other hand, includes a 3,700mAh battery on the inside. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 does have a larger battery pack, and yes, it does offer better battery life in comparison. It offers a notably better battery life, actually. The battery life that the phone offers is good, though not great, at least from the standpoint of what other phones can offer.
For the vast majority of people, it will be enough. We’ve been able to pull out around 7 hours of screen-on time from the phone, though killing it faster than that is certainly possible if you’re aiming to do so. Gaming will definitely push it towards the 0% level faster than anything else. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is not near that level, you can expect around 20% worse battery life, from what we’ve seen.
The charging speed remained unchanged. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 supports 25W wired, 15W wireless, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging, like the Galaxy Z Flip 5 did two years ago. What’s interesting is that the newer phone did charge a couple of minutes faster for us, despite the fact it has a larger battery pack. The difference was negligible, though. It’ll take you around an hour and 30 minutes to fully charge these two phones. Do note that a charger is not included in the box.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: Cameras
What about the cameras? Well, the selfie camera on the main display is the same on both phones, but the other two are not. The two phones have a 10-megapixel selfie snapper (1/3.0-inch sensor size). Two cameras can be found on the back of the two devices. A 50-megapixel main camera (1/1.57-inch sensor size) and a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera (1/3.2-inch sensor size, 123-degree FoV).

The Galaxy Z Flip 5, on the other hand, has a 12-megapixel main camera (1/1.76-inch sensor size), and a 12-megapixel ultrawide snapper (1/3.06-inch sensor size, 123-degree FoV). While the main camera on both smartphones does a fairly job, the ultrawide snappers are kind of forgettable on both ends. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 does have a better main camera, however, if you were wondering.
It does offer images that are better-balanced, while it has fewer problems with oversaturating images and oversharpening as well. On top of that, the Galaxy Z Flip 7’s main camera does a better job in low light, which is to be expected considering the hardware advantage. It actually does a solid job in low light, especially compared to other flip phones.
Audio
Yes, both of these smartphones come with stereo speakers. That is to be expected these days, especially for high-end devices. The speakers on both devices are good, but they’re not great. Not many people will have a reason to complain, though. The ones on the Galaxy Z Flip 7 are slightly louder, though not by much. The sound quality is good from both sets.
What you will not find on either phone is an audio jack. You can, however, use a Type-C port at the bottom of the two devices, if you’d like to hook up wired headphones here. Alternatively, Bluetooth 5.4 is supported on the Galaxy Z Flip 7, while you’ll get Bluetooth 5.3 support on the Galaxy Z Flip 5.
