The subtle crease down the middle of foldable phone displays has been a persistent design element since these devices first appeared. The foldable concept offers a unique blend of smartphone and tablet functionality. However, that visible line has been a trade-off for the larger screen experience. That said, new reports suggest this feature might soon be a thing of the past. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 will lead the “crease-free” foldable display future—and Apple will benefit from it too.

Recent insights from respected industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo point to this scenario. The latest reports suggest that the next iteration of Samsung‘s flagship foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 8, will debut the crease-free display technology. If true, this would give Samsung a significant competitive advantage. The company could offer the most refined visual experience in the foldable market.

Recent reports revealed that the first foldable iPhone will also use this technology. Apple will turn to Samsung instead of developing its own solution. This will allow them to ensure mass production of their first device with a foldable panel. The report hinted that the foldable iPhone might be the first to market with this technology. It wouldn’t be the first time that an iPhone’s screen features Samsung’s technology that’s more advanced than that of Samsung’s own mobile devices.

However, it seems that Samsung will ensure it’s first with a crease-free display. While it’s still very early, the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 has already won a key selling point.

So, how does Samsung’s crease-free display tech work? The key seems to lie in advancements in hinge technology. Fine M-Tec, a crucial supplier for foldable components, has announced a substantial investment to boost its capacity for new-generation laser-processed hinges. These hinges use laser-drilled metal plates designed to distribute stress more effectively when the screen bends, thereby reducing or eliminating the visible crease.

Interestingly, Apple’s stringent requirements for its own foldable iPhone will be a major catalyst in accelerating the development and adoption of this laser-drilled display metal plate technology across the industry. Even as Fine M-Tec prepares to be a primary supplier for Apple’s foldable iPhone displays, Kuo’s analysis points to them also being the exclusive supplier for the Z Fold 8’s internal hinges. This suggests Samsung is eager to integrate this advanced solution into its own product line quickly.
