Samsung‘s Galaxy Z Fold series continues to push the boundaries of smartphone innovation. The latest member in the family reflects this with an ultra-slim design. While its improvements aren’t revolutionary, there’s a lot of refinement and enhanced durability. That said, some early reports about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7‘s hinge are making waves in the community.

Reports from various sources, including what’s being seen on store display units and discussions among early users, suggest that some Galaxy Z Fold 7 models might not be unfolding completely flat.

Early observations show some Galaxy Z Fold 7 phones not unfolding flat

For a premium foldable device, the hinge is paramount. It determines how the phone folds, its overall feel, and its longevity. When a device isn’t unfolding perfectly flat, it can raise questions about potential long-term issues on the internal screen. Some early accounts also mention a slight gap when the phone is folded. Plus, there are mentions of minor wear marks appearing on hinges in busy retail environments.

A Redditor shared their experience alongside an image of the unfolded device. The image shows that a Galaxy Z Fold 7 unit doesn’t unfold completely flat.

Not a widespread issue yet

That said, it’s worth noting that these are initial observations on a limited number of devices. It’s still too early to say whether we’re facing a widespread issue with the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s hinge. It’s normal for new devices to have a small percentage of defective units upon launch. This is especially true for smartphones that feature foldable displays.

Additionally, there are also reports of the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s hinge behaving as expected. The Android Central team states that the units they were able to handle in person unfolded completely flat. We also didn’t notice the reported issue on the unit we played with.

Regardless, let’s hope the reports are from a few units. We’ll be keeping an eye on how the situation develops in the coming weeks.
