What a blast from the past. Motorola is planning to relaunch the Moto 360 in 2025, and we have your first look at the new smartwatch.
The Moto 360 first debuted in 2014, as part of the first crop of Android Wear smartwatches – alongside the Samsung Gear Live and LG G Watch. It was actually the first round smartwatch running Android Wear, despite having that “flat tire” look. Motorola made two generations of the Moto 360, in 2014 and 2015, before discontinuing it in 2017. It was then revived in 2019; however, Motorola did not make the hardware. The name was being licensed to a Canadian company called eBuyNow.
In the images we’ve been able to obtain, we can see that the Moto 360 2025 will continue using its round watch look, which is actually a bit of a surprise, considering the Moto Watch Fit, announced a few months ago, is a square watch (and also doesn’t run Wear OS). It also sports a crown at the 2 o’clock position, and a button at the 4 o’clock position, a lot like the OnePlus Watch 3.
We can confirm that the Moto 360 2025 will be available in five colors when it does launch – likely later this year, judging by the name.
Will Motorola return to Google’s Wear OS?
The big question about the Moto 360 2025 is going to be the software. What wearable operating system will Motorola be using here? As the Moto Watch Fit and previous watches Motorola has put out have not used Wear OS. Instead, it uses “Moto Watch OS,” which is a custom real-time operating system (RTOS) that Motorola has developed. This is similar to what OnePlus is using on its watches, along with Wear OS, which allows the watch to have much better battery life.
The watch face does look a lot like Wear OS, however. So it is possible that Motorola could be using a dual-OS approach here. With Wear OS and Moto Watch OS for less-intensive tasks.
