In 2024, the UK government demanded that Apple provide backdoor access to all its worldwide users’ data. The department even made the firm legally bound to not reveal this request publicly. However, the demand was later revealed as the Cupertino-based tech giant had withdrawn its end-to-end encryption services.
UK to Back Down from Its Demand for Apple’s Encrypted Data
In response to the demand made by the UK government, Apple had turned off its Advanced Data Protection plan for users residing in the UK. It also invoked the US government to take a stance against it.
The UK’s Home Office wanted Apple to provide it with backdoor access to all of its users’ encrypted data. The office said that they need to read the data, which is deemed necessary for any kind of criminal investigation. However, the office went one step ahead. Instead of asking for access to its regional data, the government demands access to worldwide users’ data. Which is alleged violation of privacy laws; and this is where the US got upset.
US Vice President JD Vance Forced UK to Pull Back
After taking cognizance of the demand, several officials from the US government, including Trump and VP JD Vance, took their stance against it. JD Vance wanted the UK to step down from its demand for Apple’s encrypted data.
UK’s Financial Times reports that the government is likely to back down from its demand. This is because of the pressure from JD Vance. “This is something that the vice-president is very upset about. And it needs to be resolved,” said one individual, who claimed to be an official in the UK’s technology department. “The Home Office is going to have to back down.”

According to another, “it’s a problem of the Home Office’s own making, and they’re working on a way around it now.”
