Waze no longer supports older phones as Google now requires a minimum of Android 10 and above versions. It is one such app that gets updated with new features once every few months. This is despite Google offering Maps for navigation, real-time traffic updates, and other similar functionalities. As the app evolves periodically, Google appears to be targeting the latest Android versions.

Waze no longer supports older phones

Waze has reportedly started letting users know that the app will no longer work with older Android versions. A Reddit user, djstoxer, has received a notification informing them that Waze won’t receive updates on their car’s head unit that’s running on Android 9 Pie.

Android Authority reports that on analysing the app’s latest version from APKMirror, they have discovered that the newest beta version requires a minimum of Android 10 OS. In comparison, the previous version supports Android 8 Oreo and Android 9 Pie as well. Since the new requirement is in beta, it should soon roll out to the stable channels.

Using Google Maps is an alternative

This Waze app requirement should impact those who have dated Android-based in-car entertainment systems or those who use old tablets for navigation. While you can continue to use the app, it will not receive any updates or new features from Google. The existing ones, like traffic updates, user-generated reports, and others, should work just fine. The app should get the latest maps with changes to existing routes or new ones.

You can choose to get a new Android phone or tablet in order to enjoy the latest features Waze has to offer. However, if that’s not an option, there’s always the Maps app, which works on all systems beyond Android 8 Oreo. The app also has a reasonably better update frequency in comparison to Waze.
