Yesterday, OpenAI released its latest and best AI model yet: GPT-5. The company even scheduled a livestream, where OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, praised and demonstrated the capabilities of the new model. The company hoped its newest model would serve users in the best possible manner. Turns out it isn’t. OpenAI is reportedly facing backlash over the GPT-5 model, with some even claiming that the latest model is “horrible.”

OpenAI facing backlash over GPT-5’s performance

Many early GPT-5 users are criticizing the new AI model on social media, including Reddit. One Redditor, danganffan11037, has posted about the shortcomings of the new models. In the post, the user noted, “Short replies that are insufficient, more obnoxious AI stylized talking, less ‘personality’ and way less prompts allowed with plus users hitting limits in an hour… and we don’t have the option to just use other models.”

Not to mention, other GPT-5 users jumped in to pour in their frustration. Another user takes a dig at the GPT-5 model, noting, “It’s like my ChatGPT suffered a severe brain injury and forgot how to read. It is atrocious now.” GPT-5 users are also frustrated by the fact that they can’t choose between older models like 4o and 4.1. Many users have said things like “I miss my GPT4o at this point,” “I miss 4.1. Bring it back,” and more.

A simple scroll through the comment section on the original post we linked above shows that GPT-5 is seriously lagging behind users’ expectations. Not to forget, ChatGPT Plus subscribers are also fuming, as they claim the latest AI model has limited the features, which were previously available with a paid subscription. For example, the GPT-5 Thinking model offers just 200 messages a week. Besides, the Plus subscribers now can’t access a variety of AI models that used to be available.

GPT-5 reportedly performing worse than GPT-4o

Well, users’ expectations around GPT-5 were huge, all thanks to the CEO of OpenAI and GPT-5’s hypeman, Sam Altman. He has been hyping GPT-5 as if it will revolutionize how humans interact with AI. Unfortunately for him, user reports suggest otherwise.

What’s worse is that people are also claiming GPT-5 is performing worse than GPT-4o. Well, that’s a big no-no, given that OpenAI launched it as its best AI model yet. Moreover, the company hasn’t addressed the backlash around GPT-5 yet. However, it’ll be interesting what Altman and his team have to say about it.
