Why the Galaxy Z Fold 7 Ditches the S Pen — and What It Means for the Future

Leading up to today’s announcement, many were worried that Samsung might ditch S Pen support on the Galaxy Z Fold 7. After all, we did not see many leaks about the S Pen, nor the S Pen Case that we’ve had for the last few Galaxy Z Fold devices. And there’s good reason for that – Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 does not support the S Pen.

Essentially, Samsung has removed the digitizer that lives under the display for the S Pen to work. And instead, made the ultra-thin glass layer a bit thicker and thus more durable.

Samsung was asked why they opted to remove the S Pen, and once again, they referred to how their customers use this device. Much like the S Pen with the Galaxy S25 Ultra earlier this year, which removed the Bluetooth Air Actions. Samsung claimed that around 1-2% of customers actually used these features.

Now, for the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung claims that its customers preferred a thinner and lighter-weight device over having S Pen support. A big reason for this is likely because the S Pen is not included in the Galaxy Z Fold package. It was only available as a separate purchase, either separately or with the S Pen case.

Will Samsung ditch the S Pen?

Given the changes to the S Pen this year, will Samsung ditch the stylus in the future? My thoughts are yes and no. I think Samsung will ditch the S Pen for smartphones, there’s already been talk of it being removed from the Galaxy S26 Ultra next year, for more internal space for things like a larger battery. And now that it is gone from the Galaxy Z Fold 7, it definitely seems likely.

However, I don’t think Samsung will fully ditch the S Pen. I think that they will keep it for their tablets and laptops. The S Pen makes a lot more sense on a tablet like the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra, with that 14.6-inch display, or the Galaxy Book 5 360. Though this is all speculation at this point, and we likely won’t really know until next year.
