Xbox and AMD have entered into a partnership that will see the latter make chipsets for future Xbox hardware, including consoles and handhelds, securing AMD as the official producer of computing and graphics chips for the Xbox brand going forward. In an official Xbox YouTube video yesterday, Xbox President Sarah Bond announced the partnership, confirming that AMD would be “powering the next generation of Xbox.” AMD CEO Lisa Su also made an announcement discussing how Xbox and AMD will be advancing the future of gaming.
AMD already produces the processor and graphics chips for Sony’s PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles. It also makes the APUs for most PC gaming handhelds, including the Steam Deck, Lenovo Legion Go S (both Windows and Steam OS models), the ROG Ally X, and even both new ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X handhelds. AMD is, by all accounts, all in on gaming handhelds and consoles.
The Xbox partnership with AMD is a multi-year partnership
This is really one of the key factors in this announcement from Xbox and AMD. This is a multi-year partnership, and that means AMD will be handling the chipsets for Xbox hardware for at least a few different products. This no doubt includes the recently-announced ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, but also the next Xbox console. And potentially any other Xbox consoles or handhelds that the company plans to produce while this partnership is active.
The partnership is said to cover the next generation, so it’s not confirmed if the partnership will go beyond that for whatever comes after the next Xbox console. However, the partnership will also span across more than just consoles and handhelds. According to Bond, Xbox is also working with AMD to power PC gaming, Xbox accessories, and Xbox’s cloud efforts.
All of Xbox and AMD’s efforts will also ensure that games are backward compatible. This confirms that Xbox is sticking with its strategy to make all Xbox platform games available on the new hardware.
