Google may soon let you create custom icon themes using AI. A move that Pixel users will most definitely appreciate. While the Pixel software offers various features, it doesn’t, for some reason, let you change app icons. At this juncture, this sure is a big deal for those who are into home screen customization.
Pixel software could get AI-powered icon themes
Pixel devices currently only offer a single icon customization option in the form of Themed Icons. However, all this does is tint the app icons to match the dominating color of the wallpaper. This only works for apps whose developers offer a monochromatic icon. Many popular apps are yet to update this look, resulting in a mixed look.

While the company can wait for developers to add support for monochromatic icons, it’s already been three years. It can also introduce an algorithm that automatically tints the existing icons, but this is a mean task. Apple and Nothing have tried this but met with varied results.
Android Authority reports that Google could be revisiting its 2023 idea where the monochromatic look automatically applies to app icons that don’t have it yet. New code strings, found in the Wallpaper & Style app in the latest Android Canary build, hint at AI themes for icons.
There could be four theme styles for app icons
The strings reportedly suggest that users will be able to choose from four styles for app icons. These include Default, Minimal (which uses a monochromatic version of app icons), AI Icons (which uses artificial intelligence to generate custom icon styles), and Create (which lets you build custom icon styles). It’s unclear how the new AI themes will work on your Google Pixel, as they are not live yet. There are chances that these could be a part of another app altogether or probably limited to internal builds at the moment.
Besides icon themes, it’s also said that Google is working on allowing users to customize icon shapes and theme packs for Pixel phones.
